During an ostentatious wedding reception at a Knoxville, Tennessee, estate, five reluctant, identically clad bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. They are Frances, a painfully sweet but sheltered fundamentalist; Mindy, the cheerful, wise-cracking lesbian sister of the groom; Georgeanne, whose heartbreak over her own failed marriage triggers outrageous behavior; Meredith, the bride’s younger sister whose precocious rebelliousness masks a dark secret; and Trisha, a jaded beauty whose die-hard cynicism about men is called into question when she meets Tripp, a charming bad-boy usher to whom there is more than meets the eye. As the afternoon wears on, these five very different women joyously discover a common bond in this wickedly funny, irreverent and touching celebration of the women’s spirit.During an ostentatious wedding reception at a Knoxville, Tennessee, estate, five reluctant, identically clad bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. We’re back with another episode of the Hello Alberni Podcast.
In this episode, you’ll hear from Sara Mazzei of the Foundation about what their group does, and you’ll hear Dennis Olsen explain why he chose Heart and Stroke as his charity.
We’ve got a special treat for you this weekend – it’s Part 1 of our Dennis Olsen chat that was held February 2, 2013 at The Capitol Theatre.
Musically, the audience enjoyed Dennis’ classical guitar stylings, many of which you’ll hear in this podcast.
Thanks go out to my co-host for “An Evening Out”, Denis Levasseur. Our technical team included Ken Wiegand on sound operations and Nathan Satterlee in the booth running the lights for the show. Paul Blondahl took the great photos you see here.
Partial proceeds from this event will benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada – by the time Part 2 of “An Evening Out” is posted, we’ll have the final donation amount to share with you.
On this episode of Hello Alberni we replay a portion of our “An Evening Out” event where we interviewed Chris Arthurs, the director of Portal Players’ upcoming production of “Reefer Madness – The Musical!”. Chris outlines what the show is about and talks about working with the cast and crew.
Thanks to Paul Blondahl for the photo above, showing Chris Arthurs, Peter Wienold and Denis Levasseur (l to r).
Also on this episode, we spoke recently with Sandy Bouleau, the musical director of the show. Sandy has assembled an outstanding orchestra to support the cast in this production, and gives us a rundown on who’s in the band.
“Reefer Madness” is recommended for adult audiences only, and tickets can be purchased online through Portal Players’ website at www.atthecapitol.org. Port Alberni ticket outlets include Rollin Art Centre and the Capitol Theatre box office during regular hours. Advance tickets are $20 each; at the door on show nights, they are $25 each.
The show runs for four weekends on Friday and Saturday nights, starting on February 22.
On a programming note, coming soon on future Hello Alberni podcast episodes: additional excerpts from “An Evening Out” with Dennis Olsen, and a feature look at Pot Luck Ceramics and their unique Fundraising Coop venture.
What an amazing and unbelievable night of music and camaraderie last Saturday at The Capitol Theatre, as we celebrated “An Evening Out” with Dennis Olsen and guests.
For the 150 people in attendance, it was a magical, musical night of beautiful acoustic guitar followed by some classic rock guitar in the second half. All of that interspersed with commentary and background, as Dennis Olsen shared his musical journey with us, live.
Also on tap was Chris Arthurs, director of the upcoming “Reefer Madness – The Musical”, being produced by Portal Players Dramatic Society. Much of the performing company was on hand to help promote the show’s February 22 opening date. Host Peter Wienold and co-host Dennis Levasseur kept the night moving right along.
Co-produced by Hello Alberni & Portal Players, and sponsored by The Graphics Factory, the minds behind the scenes were Wienold and Levasseur, who brought two different skill sets together to help make this an amazing night for everyone involved. Special thanks were sent out to Ken Wiegand, sound operator; Nathan Satterlee, lighting designer & operator and poster designer extraordinaire; Suzanne Levasseur assembled a wonderful team of volunteers at the Capitol Theatre to help with ushering, box office, concession and tend bar. Thanks for publicity assistance to the AV Times and Alberni Valley News; and special thanks to Paul Blondahl for the amazing photography seen in this and future blog posts.
While the first half featured an intimate acoustic set with Dennis Olsen solo on classical guitar, the band Storm Warning joined in for a rocking set in the second half. Gordie Rhodes, Guido Anselmo, and Denis Levasseur rallied around lead guitarist Olsen for an energy-filled group of songs, a few of which were even danceable, which resulted in some dancing action in the theatre aisles during the encore.
Be sure to get your tickets early for a wonderful night of music, interviews and entertainment. Partial proceeds will benefit the Vancouver Island Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
